We offer mentoring and coaching for mountaineering instructors, climbing instructors and mountain guides. Who wish to take advantage of assistance as they progress through their own careers and the national governing body awards.
Specifically, we provide mentoring and coaching for the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI), Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI), and the UK elements of the British Mountain Guides Training Scheme (BMG).
If you are interested in personal development over the longer term or are perhaps working towards the specific goal of a particular award in the outdoor industry, the support of a mentor may help you. Our mentoring can be done face to face but is frequently carried out online.
We believe in longer term sustainable support, taking a holistic approach to those we mentor and coach. With this in mind we offer three levels of ongoing mentoring support; Advance, Grow and Transform.
All mentoring and coaching is based on trust, for that reason we make the commitment not to identify those that we support. You can be as public or as private as you wish regarding our mentoring and coaching. It is entirely up to you. Please note that it is worth identifying yourself by name when using the MA Mentoring Community Hub online, where you can benefit from others who may have experiences to share.
Mentoring and Coaching is delivered by James Thacker. An experienced British Mountain Guide and Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI). You can find out more about James’ background here on LinkedIn or simply by getting in touch.

He isn’t sure whether to move on to do his Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (MCI). By choosing Grow Chris has benefited from a personal action plan, and has kept in touch via the MA Mentoring Community Hub online. He has his final assessment planned in the autumn.
Case Study 3 – Transform: Mike has been working in the outdoor and rope access industry for several years on a freelance basis, and has managed to achieve several national governing body awards. He thinks that now is the time to complete his Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor (WMCI) qualification and is considering applying to the British Mountain Guides Training Scheme. Sign up to Mentoring and Coaching…
Coaching is a practical individualised product but one where you potentially access the most direct and hands-on experience. In the vast majority of cases, this is the opportunity for practical coaching on the hill in the context of the delivery of instructional and guiding days.
In cases of those working towards the awards of ‘Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor’ (MCI), ‘Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor’ (WMCI), we are able to accompany you along with your own clients allowing real instructional or guiding opportunities. For those engaged in the UK stages of the British Mountain Guides Scheme, similar opportunities are available in line with the BMG Professional Standards Policy and the BMG Guidelines of Trainees and Aspirants.
With direct supervision you get a chance for some real practice in real situations with plenty of opportunity to discuss or review your existing methods and techniques. The opportunity to plan prior to and instructional day combined with time for reflection and review are essential.
Because we have direct experience of both training and assessing candidates at all award levels, our constructive feedback and valuable coaching will help steer you in right direction – not just towards an assessment “pass” but towards realising your full potential as an accomplished leader, instructor or guide.
